Unveiling North Macedonia: Your Next Ultimate Muslim-Friendly European Getaway

In recent years, Bosnia has become a hotspot for European Muslim tourism. Quite rightfully so; it has great nature, nice people, and a unique history. But what if I told you that there is another country to the south of Bosnia which has rich Islamic history, easy access to halal food, and some of the best nature in Europe?

North Macedonia, nestled in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, is a hidden gem waiting to be explored by Muslim travellers seeking a unique blend of history, culture, and spirituality.

One of the main reasons for Muslims to visit Macedonia is the rich Islamic heritage; Skopje the capital, feels like a little Istanbul with sublime Ottoman mosques such as Mustafa Pasha Mosque and the Sultan Murat Mosque, which play the Adhan five times a day. Another aspect of North Macedonia that really surprised me is how full the mosques were at all times; which contributed to a great Islamic atmosphere, especially how  Macedonians have carried an Ottoman tradition of a member of the mosque before praying reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah Al-Nas, which was very beautiful to hear. On a public bus, I sat next to a teenager who was using an electronic tasbeeh, and I ended up having a lovely conversation with him about life in Macedonia. In my experience also, people would speak to me in the mosque and invite me to their shops. The old town is specifically adorned with Ottoman-era architecture and bazaars, which sell incredible souvenirs, including many Islamic souvenirs and Yugoslav memorabilia. Subhanallah, there were at least three Muslim shops in Skopje, selling Hijabs, Qurans, fiqh books, and Zam Zam water. These sacred structures stand as enduring symbols of the rich Islamic legacy that has shaped the cultural identity of North Macedonia, inviting Muslims to explore and appreciate the heritage that has left an indelible mark on the country. Moreover, Skopje has been listed among the best European capitals for a weekend getaway.

Beyond the historical wonders, North Macedonia’s natural beauty is some of the best in the world. Bus tickets from Skopje to the breath-taking Matka Canyon cost only 35 MKD (£0.50) each way, but the scenic route is well worth the low fare. The trip takes around 45 minutes.

The country is also home to the picturesque Ohrid Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where the crystal-clear waters of Lake Ohrid reflect the towering mountains and lush landscapes. The summer months had the perfect temperature for swimming and general relaxation. In the town of Ohrid, sometimes called the “European Jerusalem ”, Muslims can find tranquillity in the presence of numerous Ottoman-era mosques, such as the Ali Pasha Mosque, which was built in the 16th century. The town is nestled among cobblestone streets, charming houses, and Turkish shops selling kebabs and baklava. The Quran was being played aloud in the street. The soothing ambience of these sacred sites, set against the backdrop of the lake’s tranquillity, offers a beautiful Islamic experience within Europe. Moreover, from the city, you can hire paddle boards and kayaks to explore the lake at your own pace. Inside the city of Ohrid, the typical price of a double bedroom, according to KAYAK, is £52 per night. However, some hotels can be found for as little as £30 per night. If you would like to escape the town and be almost completely alone, then Robinson Sunset House would be best, which has family rooms available. From this hostel, you can relax on the beach and even use their canoe to explore the lake. Nearby, there are restaurants at affordable prices; a whole trout, a drink, and a dessert for £13.95. Another time spaghetti and a drink cost £6. Alternatively, there is a Mini Mart nearby, so if families want to cook at Robinson, they can. It is also worth doing a boat tour of the lake for around £13, which takes a few hours and you can get beautiful views of the lake, as well as visiting the Bay of Bones museum and Monastery of Saint Naum.

A very nice day trip from Ohrid is Bitola, which is just over an hour’s drive or an hour and a half bus from the station. Travellers can stroll through its well-preserved Ottoman-era streets, discovering the grandeur of the Ishak Çelebi Mosque and the Yeni Mosque. In addition, Bitola has a very nice Ottoman clock tower and the Ancient Macedonian City Heraclea Lyncestis, which gives insight into ancient Macedonia. The city’s atmosphere, with its cobblestone streets and charming cafes, makes it a worthwhile trip.

When we think of the most beautiful mosques in the world, we usually think of the Hagia Sophia, Al-Aqsa, and Masjid al-Haram. In my own travel experience, North Macedonia has offered some of the most beautiful mosques I’ve seen. Tetovo, which is a majority Muslim city west of Skopje, is around an hour’s bus ride. Tetovo is home to the iconic Painted Mosque, a masterpiece that captivates visitors with its colourful ceiling that is mesmerising. This architectural gem, dating back to the 15th century, stands as a testament to the beauty of Islam in the Balkans. It is worth coming to Tetovo just to see this mosque. But photos do not do it justice.

But how does one get to North Macedonia? You can get direct flights from Luton airport on Wizz for as little as around £155 in June but can rise to almost £300 in August. An alternative way of getting there is flying to Tirana, Albania, and then taking a bus for £15 to Ohrid or getting a taxi for £60, which might be worth it for large families.

North Macedonia beckons Muslim travellers with a tapestry woven from the threads of history, spirituality, and cultural diversity. From the enchanting landscapes of Ohrid to the bustling bazaars of Skopje, and the rich Islamic heritage of Tetovo, this Balkan country provides a holistic experience for those seeking to deepen their connection with faith while exploring the captivating allure of a land where history and spirituality converge.
